Instructions That Fit the Reader - Year 3
Learners compare practical instruction pairs, identify the shared goal, quote a specific reader clue and explain a useful difference. The five contexts are a reading marker, name stand, memory game, sorting tray and paper pattern game. Children practise interpreting vocabulary and picture labels, play Instruction Detective, test instructions, draft two versions and justify a revision. Examples show that experience matters: an adult newcomer may need detail that an experienced child can already use.

Learning focus
Recognise a similar purpose across two texts. Link wording, definitions, useful labels and detail to a reader's needs. Keep materials, necessary actions and game rules intact while adapting communication. Explain and test a specific revision.
Classroom use
Five lessons of about 50–60 minutes, with modelling, guided and independent practice, support, extension and assessment evidence. Adult preparation includes cutting cards and supplying the stated paper dimensions, pencils, labels and ordinary materials. Oral responses, pointing or a scribe can support access without supplying decisions. The unseen assessment pair is kept separate from the taught quiz examples.
Teacher benefits
Ready-to-use comparison examples and cut-out material sets; complete lesson-specific preparation and differentiation; practical testing and revision; separate recognition and adaptation evidence; open-response guidance that allows defensible alternatives.
