Images Change a Reader's View — Year 6 Poetry Unit
Images Change a Reader's View helps Year 6 students explain how a poet's chosen words alter meaning and feeling. Students read two complete original poems about a local park before and after rain, compare literal detail with metaphor and personification, and trace sensory imagery. They practise quoting an exact line, describing the picture it creates and explaining its effect. A fresh original court poem provides an independent assessment of two imagery choices and one sound choice.

Learning focus
Compare literal and figurative description, explain sensory imagery and selected sound effects, and connect two image choices and one sound choice to meaning or reader effect with exact line evidence. Device labels alone do not satisfy the final criterion.
Classroom use
Use over five 45–60-minute lessons. Model with the presentation and original poems, guide decisions with worksheets, practise explanations with the partner cards, then assess on a fresh poem. The teacher guide includes support, core and extension routes, sample feedback and card answers. Accept justified alternative interpretations and accessible response modes.
Formats and answers
PDF and editable PPTX files. Unit Plan: 25 pages. Presentation: 18 slides. Quiz: 26 slides. Practice and assessment have directly adjacent answer or marking pages.
