Grid Maps & Coordinates Years 4–6 Maths Unit Bundle

Build confident map-reading and coordinate skills across Years 4–6 with four complete maths units. This progression moves from compass directions, legends, symbols, routes and simple scale through grid references and map design to ordered pairs across all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane.

Teach spatial reasoning through practical contexts including islands, streets, shopping centres, towns, zoos, parks, treasure maps and coordinate art. Students learn to orient maps, describe relative position, locate features, follow and create routes, interpret keys and scale, plot points, describe coordinate changes and reflect points across axes.

The two Year 4 units provide complementary pathways: Magnificent Maps develops broad map-reading skills, while Compass Directions offers deeper practice with the eight-point compass, changing north arrows, grid references and multi-step route planning. Grid Maps extends the progression in Year 5 through column-row coordinates, keys, route language and original map design. The Year 6 Cartesian Coordinates unit then develops ordered pairs, positive and negative values, quadrants, axes, movement and reflection.
