Build a practical habit of asking, "Which source detail supports those words?" Students use fictional lunchtime choices and garden observations to identify supported findings, personal opinions, mixed claims and ideas that a source cannot establish. They repair unsupported reasons or ratings and write a source-supported report alongside a clearly labelled personal recommendation. A fresh fictional library trial provides an independent assessment.

The teaching distinguishes the largest count from a majority and explains why changing a verb cannot fix an unsupported claim. Garden tasks describe observed counts without inventing a cause or assuming that no visible new leaves means a seedling is dead. Students may express genuine views; they do not need to agree with the model preference.

Learning focus

Accurate source details; thinking and reporting verbs and phrases; personal-view cues; supported findings; mixed claims; missing evidence and source limits; short report writing; separately labelled recommendations.

Classroom use

Use across five lessons: approximately 50 minutes for Lessons 1–4 and 60 minutes for Lesson 5. Each plan includes modelling, guided practice, independent work, formative assessment, support and extension. Read sources aloud or use pointing, oral response or adult recording where helpful. Keep the reasoning with the student and record the actual support used. No real class survey is required.

Teacher benefits

Ready-to-use fictional sources keep the focus on language and evidence rather than collecting a class survey. Worked models and matched answers make source checks explicit. A fresh assessment source supports transfer, while criterion-based marking records accuracy, cues, purposeful language, separation and limits independently.
