Foundation–Year 1 Features of 3D Objects Variety Pack | 3 Maths Units
Build confident early geometry language with three complete Foundation and Year 1 maths units about the features of three-dimensional objects. Students recognise, name, sort, compare and describe familiar 3D objects through explicit teaching, visual models, classroom displays, hands-on games, worksheets, quizzes and assessment.
This variety pack combines three distinct teaching approaches. The Foundation unit develops accessible language for cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones and rectangular prisms, including flat and curved surfaces and whether objects roll, slide or stack. The first Year 1 unit extends this work to faces, edges, corners and an apex through detective challenges, dominoes, feature cards and puzzles. The updated Year 1 unit provides an additional pathway using faces, edges and vertices, Monster Sort, Who Am I? games, graphing and a museum challenge.
Together, the units provide flexible options for a Foundation–Year 1 progression, composite classes, intervention, maths rotations and extra practice without repeating an identical lesson sequence. Editable presentations and quizzes support whole-class modelling and review, while printable activities, answer pages and five-level rubrics make independent practice and assessment straightforward.

LEARNING FOCUS
- Recognise and name familiar three-dimensional objects.
- Distinguish flat 2D shapes from solid 3D objects.
- Identify flat faces, curved surfaces, edges, corners, vertices and an apex at the appropriate year level.
- Count and compare observable object features.
- Predict and test whether objects roll, stack or slide.
- Sort and classify objects by their features.
- Connect geometric objects to familiar real-world examples.
- Explain similarities, differences and observations using mathematical language.
CLASSROOM USE
Teach the resources as a Foundation–Year 1 progression, select the approach that best matches your learners, or rotate activities across whole-class lessons, guided groups and maths centres. The three distinct units support approximately three weeks of flexible teaching, targeted revision or differentiated practice for composite classes.
