Foundation Set 01 Decodable Readers - First letter groups: m, s, t, a, p, i, f and r
Give students their first short, connected reading after both initial letter groups have been taught. The books use the available sounds to build small words and meaningful sentences, while the companion connects saying sounds with building, reading and writing words.
This set connects four short books with practical phonics work. The paired editions use the same text and matching artwork, so you can choose Black and White or Colour for the reading session. The companion returns to the sounds and spellings used in the books through guided practice, word work and connected reading and writing.

Learning focus
First letter groups: m, s, t, a, p, i, f and r. Blend and segment short a and i words, sort their middle vowels and build a simple sentence.
Using the readers
Introduce the focus spellings and any words needing support. Model sounding out and blending, read a book together, then revisit it for accurate, smoother reading and discussion. Use the companion to link spoken sounds, written spellings and meaning. Support the activity directions as needed.
Readiness and placement
Begin after both groups m, s, t, a and p, i, f, r have been explicitly taught. Students need practice blending and segmenting with these sounds. Introduce the named words needing support before reading.
