Flexible Readers Monitor Meaning — Year 4 Unit of Work
Give Year 4 readers a clear, repeatable way to check meaning while reading. Students work with an original orchard-detour narrative, a rain-garden report and a short instruction text. They set a purpose, read accurately, notice when meaning slips, choose a repair, check the printed words and surrounding information, and reread for sense.
The teaching sequence moves through modelling, guided decisions, independent repair logs, a 12-card partner game and fresh two-text assessment. Students explain their strategy choice and the meaning they reached. The teacher records actual connected oral reading as well as the response; a fast reading rate or invented error is not required.
