Something Harder

There isn’t a close match for the year above yet.

Start with a real reading purpose: where should I look, and how will that feature help? Finding Facts in Print uses an invented School Nature Club to model contents, headings, subheadings, index and glossary navigation. A two-page narrative shows how chapter titles hint at events and places. Students retrieve information, write clearer headings, sort and justify routes, play a six-turn pair game and repair three deliberate navigation faults.

The final task introduces the new School Making Club book and an 88-word school story. Students give feature, page, fact and purpose evidence, create a meaningful heading, and justify a narrative chapter choice. A four-criterion rubric and five-lesson observation/exit record help teachers distinguish independent navigation from recorded support. Accurate supported alternative routes are accepted.

Included resources:

  • 45-page Unit Plan PDF, including one contents page, one teacher quick-start, five complete lesson plans and 38 resource/answer pages.
  • 24-slide editable teaching PowerPoint.
  • 22-slide editable quiz PowerPoint: ten question/answer pairs, cover and finish.
  • Colour Ask, choose, find, check display with a full mint example.
  • Complete four-page School Nature Club book and four-page School Making Club book, each with its own page numbers.
  • Two-page Missing Club Key narrative model and fresh two-chapter Display Surprise story task.
  • Find it and explain, Heading ladder, Reader repair, Choose a chapter and Making Club independent tasks.
  • Twelve Which tool? cards; four feature mats; two complete extension snippets; Question to Route game rules, six-turn record, worked record and full numbered answer/sorting key.

  • Clean Table of Contents JPG and combined 91-page watermarked Preview PDF.

Learning focus

Purposeful feature choice; accurate page/section navigation; checked evidence; explaining a reader benefit; useful headings; transfer to fresh information and narrative texts. Feature naming alone, speed and spelling are not the main assessment criteria.

Classroom use

Five lessons of approximately 50–55 minutes for Year 3. Model choices aloud, practise in pairs and collect independent evidence in the new text. Copy only the pages needed and keep red answers away during independent tasks. Read passages aloud or support oral, pointed or scribed responses when needed; record support separately. All clubs and stories are invented, with complete source texts supplied. No external book or internet research is required.
