Help Year 6 learners explain how film posters foreground different parts of the same story for particular audiences. This five-lesson English unit uses original fictional films, complete synopses, paired campaigns and supplied release briefs. Students quote language, point to image details and explain how those features serve a stated campaign goal.

Country names locate these particular fictional campaigns. Lessons explicitly challenge claims about national preferences, invented plot changes and audience results that the sources do not provide. No commercial films, video access or external subscriptions are needed.

Five 55-minute lessons move from teacher modelling and evidence-chain sorting to supported comparison, a campaign briefing-room practical, independent transfer and unseen assessment. Support, Core and Extension comparison pages retain the same reasoning focus. Read-aloud, pointing, oral explanation and scribing choices support access without providing the interpretation.

The practical includes six complete film pairs and 18 case cards, two reusable recording/choice mats, an individual record and six full checking pages. Learners explain before revealing the models, identify missing evidence and repair their reasoning. This is a discussion and analysis activity rather than a popularity vote.

The final assessment uses a fresh Glasshouse Key pair. Learners analyse meanings and evidence, compare contexts, and justify a new release choice. Matching red model-answer pages and a two-page, four-criterion teacher rubric support marking. Valid alternatives need accurate evidence and a clear explanation; drawing skill is not assessed.

What's included

  • 81-page Unit Plan PDF: clean contents page, one combined teacher quick-start, five detailed lesson-plan pages and 74 resource pages, including sources, displays, student activities, model answers, practical material, assessment and rubric.
  • Editable 45-slide teaching presentation in PPTX format.
  • Editable 22-slide quiz in PPTX format: cover, 10 alternating question/answer pairs and closing slide.
  • 148-page watermarked Preview PDF containing the Unit Plan, presentation and quiz. Its first contents page is clean.
  • Separate clean Table of Contents JPEG.

The 74 resource pages are contained within the Unit Plan PDF; they are not 74 separately editable worksheets. The resource total includes 14 matching red-answer pages and six practical checking pages. Sources, displays and practical materials are in colour; student records, assessment and rubric use low-ink layouts. The presentation and quiz are editable; the PDF resource artwork and text are flattened.

Learning focus

  • Identify the ideas and events a poster foregrounds within a shared film synopsis.
  • Use precise wording and image evidence rather than unsupported genre or country guesses.
  • Connect language and framing choices to the supplied audience, occasion, purpose and commissioning brief.
  • Compare the expectations two campaigns may create, recognise unknowns and evaluate alternative interpretations.
  • Justify a campaign choice for a new stated goal with evidence and explained links.

Classroom use

Teach in five 55-minute sessions. Display the editable presentation, distribute complete paired sources and keep checking pages hidden until learners record explanations. Use the practical in small groups with rotating reader, feature-finder, brief-linker and checker roles. Support uses P1-P2; Core uses P1-P4; Extension uses all six pairs with alternative interpretations. Use Bridge Badge for independent transfer before the fresh Glasshouse Key assessment. Assessment access may include read-aloud, pointing, oral explanation or scribing without interpretation prompts.

Teacher benefits

Complete original reading sources avoid reliance on commercial movie access. Specific campaign facts make evidence-to-context reasoning possible. Paired student/model pages and full case checks support feedback. Low-ink response pages provide substantial writing space. Editable decks allow teachers to adjust lesson delivery.

Digital product and licence

Digital download; no physical item. Classroom teaching resources for the purchasing teacher's use. Do not redistribute or resell the files, extracted artwork or answer pages. Share classroom copies with your own learners; keep answer/check pages separate until reasoning is recorded. PowerPoint-compatible software is needed to edit the two decks; a PDF reader is needed for the Unit Plan. Fonts are not included. The supplied PDF preview shows the rendered appearance.
