How can we give every table the same number? How many full packs can we make? Fair Shares for Our Classroom helps Year 1 students answer these different questions without confusing an amount for each recipient, a number of groups and a total.
Students name what they know and need to find, represent the story, choose a calculation strategy, give a contextual answer and check their model. The five planned 45-minute lessons move from comparing and repairing shares through equal sharing, packing and repeated groups to independent supply problems. Core quantities are within 20. The 24-object challenge is optional.
The practical kits provide the actual counters, mats, task cards, records, rules, models and checks used by the lessons. Worked posters and slide feedback support teaching; unsolved worksheets and fresh assessment pages leave space for student thinking. Use matched answer pages after the attempt. Valid alternative strategies and models are accepted where appropriate.
What's included
- 56-page Unit Plan PDF: one cover/contents page, one combined Teacher Quick Start, five complete lesson-plan pages and 49 resource pages, including answers.
- 24-slide editable teaching presentation with purposeful examples, guided attempts before feedback, native diagrams and movable-counter practice.
- 22-slide editable quiz: cover, ten consecutive question/answer pairs with explanations, and closing.
- Complete 102-page Preview PDF: all 56 Unit Plan pages, 24 teaching slides and 22 quiz slides, in that order.
- Separate clean Table of Contents JPEG.
Learning focus
Compare equal and unequal quantities; share a total among a known number of recipients; pack a total into groups of a known size; find a total from repeated groups; repair unequal shares while preserving all items; connect models, strategies, answer meanings and checks.
Classroom use
Whole-class explicit teaching, paired practical kit work and selected independent follow-up. The worksheet pool offers choices for identified learning needs. Spread practical observations across Lessons 3–5; combine them with both formal sheets and supporting quiz evidence.
Adults may read directions, prepare cut pieces and record responses. Students can move pieces, point, speak or draw. Use the labelled movable-counter slide in PowerPoint edit view or work with physical pieces beside the displayed picture. Record access support separately from prompts supplying the mathematics. Literacy, cutting, speed, formal symbols and a quiz percentage are not assessment pass requirements.
Teacher benefits
Complete lesson references connect the teaching deck to the supplied resources.
Physical, diagram and virtual options support different ways to show the same mathematics.
Blank student tasks preserve the opportunity to solve before feedback.
Practical and formal evidence covers sharing, grouping and repeated groups.
Access notes distinguish communication support from help that supplies mathematical thinking.
Digital product and licence
Digital resource; no physical product or classroom equipment is included. Open PPTX files in PowerPoint to edit teaching text, diagrams and the labelled movable-counter practice. Preview pages are watermarked; the Unit Plan PDF is clean. Use according to the purchase/platform licence; do not redistribute the files.
Answers
matched red answers for all nine practice worksheets and both formal sheets; matching S/K checking guides; one labelled possible open-plan answer; marking guide and rubric. Observation records are blank for real classroom evidence.
Printable resource artwork is contained in the PDF and is not an editable worksheet file.
