Expressing Feelings and Opinions - Year 3
Children begin with fictional story clues, choose a possible feeling and explain their reasoning. They then compare the degree of the same feeling, write opinions with relevant reasons and revise how firm an opinion sounds while keeping its position. Context-sensitive tasks distinguish ordinary requests, suggestions, uncertain possibilities and urgent safety instructions.
The Message Match game gives pairs repeated practice in saying a suitable message, explaining their word choices and trying another version. A new two-page assessment, four-criterion rubric and reflection support feedback and next teaching. Examples make room for defensible alternatives; stronger wording is not automatically better.

Learning focus
Explain a feeling with a relevant story clue; compare degree without changing the feeling; support an opinion with reasons; revise language strength while preserving purpose; adapt wording to the situation and listener; distinguish possibility from a requirement in context.
Classroom use
Whole-class modelling, partner discussion, independent practice and a two-player game. Read-aloud, oral rehearsal, scribing and two-choice vocabulary supports retain the reasoning target. Extension asks students to justify alternatives and adapt messages for different listeners. Use fictional situations without requiring personal emotional disclosures. Select colour or low-ink card/game copies; print needed pages and prepare the cards.
