Explain Predictions and Chance Events - Year 3

Students explain what could happen and justify a chance prediction from the full given source or everyday conditions. They use likely, unlikely, certain and impossible; compare the same event in two equal-total sets; correct weak claims; and keep uncertainty when a plan or result cannot provide a guarantee.

The Two Set Prediction Lab supplies all 24 cards, both 12-slot mats and the full prediction/draw/reset workflow. The Chance Advice Clinic provides six complete practical or everyday cases and a three-case reply record. Three fresh assessment pages collect independent reasoning before the teacher shows the matching keys.

What's included

  • Unit Plan/resource PDF: 64 pages, including contents, one teacher quickstart, five detailed 45-minute lesson plans and 58 resource pages.
  • Teaching PowerPoint: 44 editable slides, with complete sources, separate tries and feedback, whole editable card banks, 12-slot workspaces and blank records.
  • Quiz PowerPoint: 22 editable slides, with cover, 10 question/answer pairs and closing.
  • Five colour references/display pages.
  • Nine practice-and-answer pairs.
  • Two complete 12-card paper banks, matched mats, lab guide, prediction record/key and changed-setup page/key.
  • Advice guide, six full case/key pairs and reply record/example key.

Learning focus

Possible outcomes; likely and unlikely from the full source; certain and impossible from all or none of the permitted outcomes; count-based and condition-based reasons; comparison of the same event; corrections to unsupported guarantees.

Classroom use

Five 45-minute lessons for whole-class modelling, paired practical work and individual explanation. Use full equal-size card sets with plain identical backs, shuffle and choose one without seeing its face, then record the actual result. Replace and reshuffle before a prediction about an unchanged set. After the optional swap, restore and count both original sets.

Students may speak, point, draw, use a communication device or direct adult recording. Record access support separately from mathematical hints. Keep fresh assessment sources for the final lesson and collect initial reasoning before hints or keys.

Teacher benefits

Complete source pieces and matching workspaces; explicit prediction, draw and reset instructions; practical and everyday reasoning; useful teacher access choices; fresh assessment with example keys and an evidence-based blank rubric.

Optional enrichment

Balanced chances are available after explicit teaching and are not a required assessment barrier. The core unit does not require numerical probabilities, fractions, percentages, formal independence or repeated-trial quotas.
