Embedded Clauses in Information Reports - Year 6
Teach embedded clauses through precise factual report writing over five lessons of about 55 minutes each. Pupils begin with a fictional Class Invention Gallery, practise with Class Display Labels and a Puppet Display, then transfer their learning to a fresh Miniature Town record. All facts needed for the grammar tasks are supplied; no model construction, real gallery data, experiments or purchases are required.
The sequence moves from modelling and guided investigation to differentiated practice, four justified Sentence Studio decisions and independent composition. It teaches contextual comma choices rather than an automatic comma rule, accepts accurate identifying that/which alternatives, and checks what the complete sentence means. Reading aloud, source chunks, oral rehearsal, typing, dictation or a recorded explanation can support access. Record the help actually used; final grammar choices remain the learner's own.

Twenty-eight matching completed task/check pages use red answers. A separate complete Display Labels repair model explains the source errors.
Learning focus
Identify a complete noun-expanding clause, its noun and verb, and explain what its detail contributes. Compare a clause with a phrase. Use explicit context to choose identifying or additional detail and justify punctuation. Combine and repair whole sentences while preserving facts and clear noun reference. Write a short coherent information report with purposeful sentence variety and explain the choices.
Classroom use
Use the supplied fictional records for explicit modelling, guided comparison, differentiated practice and independent reports. Pairs or groups of 2–4 complete four justified Studio turns before individual writing. Final assessment uses a new source with separate analysis, repair, report and explanation evidence. Keep sources available and keys hidden until after first attempts.
Formats and answers
The teaching presentation and quiz contain native editable PowerPoint text. Unit Plan and Preview are PDFs; resource-page text in the Unit Plan is not individually editable. Displays, mats and cards are in colour; pupil practice, assessment and rubric pages are black and white, with red teacher answers immediately following their matching tasks. Print selected pages or project the decks. The full Preview is watermarked.
Unit Plan: 84 pages. Presentation: 27 slides. Quiz: 22 slides, ten questions. Preview: 133 pages. Twenty-eight matching red task/check pages plus separate teacher analysis, repair and scored-report models.
Teacher benefits
Supplied facts make reference and punctuation choices explainable. Support/Core/Extension practice addresses different levels of independence. ID-matched card checks provide specific reasons and acceptable alternatives. The fresh report assessment separates taught recall from transfer, and the analytic rubric records evidence and actual support for each criterion.
