Students work with separate inputs from 1 to 20. They ask whether each input is even, add 2 for a yes answer or add 1 otherwise, record the output and stop after the final input. They then test a fresh rule, repair a missing branch or stop instruction and show their reasoning in an independent assessment.

The sequence spans five 45–60-minute lessons. A three-page teacher guide gives preparation, timed teaching moves, answer keys, support and extension. Learners first compare contrasting worked examples, then complete guided and independent trace tables. A 12-card partner game requires a branch explanation on every turn. Transfer tasks and the final assessment check whether the learner can trace both branches and communicate why each applies.

Learning focus

Identify a testable even/odd condition, choose an operation, record a trace, repair missing instructions and create a new finite decision algorithm. Learners explain their results using the actual branch and calculation.

Classroom use

Display the model, use the step cards and partial tables for support, practise with the partner game, then collect the independent assessment and rubric evidence. Oral or scribed explanations can reduce incidental reading and motor demands while preserving the maths.
