Curate a Gallery — Years 5–6 Visual Arts Unit Plan
Students create one substantial original artwork and explain how selection, context and display choices communicate an idea. They investigate exhibitions and particular artist contexts, experiment with visual conventions, make and refine their work, select two process records, communicate a curatorial statement, present a safe classroom display and evaluate a real viewer response.
The core route completes essential learning and assessment within Lessons 1–8. A partner or small class audience is enough. Optional Lesson 9 tests one access alternative; optional Lesson 10 offers guided viewing of completed learning. These optional sessions are not required for assessment.

Learning focus
Interpret visual and contextual evidence; test and refine deliberate art choices; connect materials and visual conventions to purpose; select process evidence; justify sequence, labels and audience access; evaluate viewer responses and adapt a display for a new case.
Classroom use
Plan approximately 60 minutes for each core art lesson, splitting practical sessions if needed. Use drawing paper, scrap/coloured paper, pencils, glue sticks and school-approved scissors. Make artworks on separate art paper. Teachers check stability, clear routes and exits. Allow speech, drawing, writing, demonstration, pointing, supported choices or a communication device. A small classroom gallery is sufficient.
