Help Year 4 students move beyond naming shapes and begin reasoning about how shapes can be combined, separated and rearranged. This unit develops students' ability to compose familiar 2D shapes into purposeful designs, decompose composite outlines, compare alternative constructions and explain their choices using accurate geometric vocabulary.
The lesson sequence reviews familiar triangles and quadrilaterals before introducing composite shapes, joining rules, worked examples and strategy. Students then apply their learning through pattern blocks, tangrams, a classroom race game, five differentiated practice contexts and a two-part design assessment.
The presentation and quiz contain native editable PowerPoint text. Printable practice and assessment pages use a deliberate low-ink format, while matching answer pages show responses in red for efficient marking.
Learning focus
- Compose two or more familiar 2D shapes to create a composite shape.
- Decompose a composite outline into component shapes.
- Rotate and resize pieces while keeping intended edges aligned.
- Compare more than one valid construction of the same outline.
- Explain design choices using terms such as triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezium, semicircle and hexagon.
Classroom use
Use the presentation to introduce and model concepts, then select the display, reference card, hands-on activities, game and worksheets for whole-class, small-group or independent practice. The ten-question quiz, two-part assessment and rubric support review and assessment.
