Counting Inspectors - Year 1 Maths Unit
Counting Inspectors makes checking a count the purpose of the task. Students inspect the actual contents of each group, follow a running count and explain whether a claim is correct or needs fixing. They investigate missed or repeated groups, unequal groups, omitted singles and counts that stop at 100.
The five 45-minute lessons build from small groups to collections reaching 120. Students count, regroup the same objects and compare two valid totals. Worked examples, guided practice and independent tasks give students several ways to show their reasoning. Adults read directions and quiz questions aloud; students can speak, point, move counters, use pictures or a communication device, or have an adult record their response.

Learning focus
Check the contents of equal groups of 2, 5 or 10; distinguish groups from objects; count each group and single once; continue cumulative counts beyond 100; explain and repair a counting error; regroup the same collection and verify that the total is unchanged.
Classroom use
Use for a five-lesson teaching week, explicit number teaching, guided maths groups and follow-up practice. Lesson plans include materials, timed teaching steps, support, useful challenge, assessment and precise feedback. Print at 100% actual size and have an adult cut the cards and counter pieces. A pair can share and reset one complete set; ordinary classroom counters are a supported alternative.
Keep unsolved tasks separate from worked models, preparation totals and checking guides. Gather individual observations across Lessons 3-5 with an actual unknown collection of 120 and a reset collection with singles. Record the verified range and mathematical support honestly. Reading, handwriting, fluent speech, cutting and speed are not assessment requirements.
Teacher benefits
Two complete kits provide the full 120-piece bank and enough empty cells to organise it. Worked examples and plausible errors make checking visible. Practical observations, independent sheets and the quiz support specific feedback. Access choices allow mathematical evidence without requiring a written or spoken-only response.
