Teach children to replace a vague direction with an object, action and place. Partners listen, restate meaning, ask for missing details and revise a confusing step. Teams practise sharing a reason, responding to a different suggestion and adding a useful detail before giving and receiving the agreed instructions.
Five lessons progress from a clear first step to clarification, a hidden-scene game, negotiated team planning and a fresh welcome-station challenge. Each lesson includes explicit modelling, guided and independent practice, support/core/extension, a plenary and observable evidence. One combined teacher quick-start page keeps general preparation concise.

Learning focus
Clear short instructions; relevant listener response and restatement; clarification; ideas and reasons; respectful alternatives; connected additions; revision of a shared plan.
Classroom use
Year 2, approximately ages 7–8; a complete five-lesson week of about 45–50 minutes per lesson. Use adult read-aloud, pictures, rehearsal or scribing as needed. Accept speaking, pointing, pictures or a communication device. Assess the child’s own meaning across both instruction roles, a relevant question and team response. A finished mat or quiz alone is not the whole assessment. Several workable plans are accepted.
Preparation:
Copy matching mats at full size and manipulative piece sheets at 40% size; provide an upright folder and instruction cards. Adult cutting support is appropriate. Keep role cues full size when needed. Reserve the fresh welcome-station materials for the final task.
Formats
2 editable PPTX files, 2 PDF files and 1 Table of Contents JPG.
Page counts: Unit Plan 40 pages; presentation 22 slides; quiz 19 slides; Preview 81 pages.
Answers
Seven immediate red-answer/example pages. Closed sequence keys are explicit; open answers are labelled examples and allow other relevant, workable responses. Quiz feedback is separate and uses black text.
Teacher benefits
Complete paired game dependencies and a role-swap routine; clear teacher scripts and keys; meaningful oral interaction; a fresh transfer task; flexible communication support; practical observation and rubric evidence.
