Circuit Makers - Year 6
Circuit Makers supports a practical Year 6 investigation of electrical circuits. Students connect complete conducting paths with observable outputs, explain energy changes, plan fair material comparisons and use repeated evidence to diagnose safe circuit faults.
Students explain complete conducting paths, switches, conductor/insulator evidence, current and energy, and energy transformations in bulbs, buzzers and suitable motor modules. They plan controlled comparisons, preserve repeated and uncertain observations, troubleshoot one change at a time, and justify safe purpose-based recommendations. A short real Taronga research-partnership example teaches scientific collaboration; circuit teams and school design scenarios are clearly fictional.
Teach the full ten-lesson route at about 60 minutes per lesson, or use the reviewed eight-session route. The compact route combines lessons 2/3 and 9/10 through selected slides from the same files. It preserves the essential teaching and completes the same assessment in session 8.
What's included
- Ten separate editable lesson presentations, numbered 01-10 (110 slides in total).
- One editable unit quiz with ten questions and separate explanation slides (24 slides).
- 59-page Unit Plan PDF with teacher guidance, ten complete lesson plans, the full and compact routes, and resources.
- Two colour concept/evidence displays.
- Eight circuit case cards across two colour pages.
- A three-page cooperative Evidence Trail game with rules, six-stop board and eight challenge cards.
- Ten black-and-white learning records, each immediately followed by a matched red-answer/model page.
- Two black-and-white assessment pages and a specific four-criterion rubric.
- Clean Table of Contents JPEG and a complete 193-page watermarked Preview PDF.
Learning focus
Complete-path reasoning, consistent circuit representations, safe controlled methods, honest repeated observations, suitable tables/models, evidence limitations, communication for a classmate and a responsible school recommendation.
Classroom use
Use the slides to model each task, then allow substantial investigation and explanation time. Gather ongoing portfolio and teacher-conference evidence. Students can explain through writing, drawing, speaking, practical demonstration, selected pictures/symbols, a communication board/device or adult scribing. Supports retain the same science expectations. Extension focuses on evidence, uncertainty, model limitations and a new safe case.
Practical preparation
Real investigations require adult-checked, school-approved low-voltage equipment and correctly rated components. Disconnect before every change. No mains, coin/button/lithium cells, dismantled batteries/devices, shorts, overload or unprotected LEDs. Use the labelled model/illustrative alternatives when equipment is unavailable; these are not claimed as classroom trials.
Formats and answers
Editable PowerPoint lesson/quiz files (PPTX), Unit Plan and Preview PDFs, and Table of Contents JPG. The learner resource pages are supplied within the PDF. Required practical equipment is not included.
Unit Plan: 59 pages, including 28 teacher guide/lesson-plan pages, one contents page and 30 resource/answer pages.
Lesson presentations: ten files, 110 slides total.
Quiz: one file, ten questions, 24 slides including separate explanations.
Preview: 193 pages, covering the complete Unit Plan, all lesson slides in order, then the quiz.
Answer availability: ten matched red-answer/model pages; sample reasoning and illustrative observations are labelled. No fixed answer is imposed on actual classroom results.
Teacher benefits
Separate lesson files make the sequence easy to navigate. The compact route preserves assessment rather than dropping the final concepts. Clear records and examples distinguish observations from models. Flexible response modes support the same learning expectations.
