Choose, Check and Edit Words - Year 4
Help students explain why a spelling belongs in a sentence, then use it independently. This unit teaches ownership, place, contractions, number and time through short school-life notices, timetables and club messages. Explicit models lead into guided reasoning, support/core/extension practice, spelling retrieval, message repair and purposeful writing.

Resource detail:
The printable resources include two classroom displays; a concealed-answer diagnostic; a three-column sorting mat and 15 sentence cards; support, core and extension practice for three word groups; high-frequency read-cover-write-check practice; two school-message repair texts; a complete Sentence Check Challenge game with rules, a 12-turn record, a 16-space board, four cuttable pieces and 16 cards; a message planner and writing/editing sheet; three independent assessment pages; and a four-level rubric.
Matched keys follow the relevant student sheets. Open-response models illustrate valid answers; other accurate original messages and explanations can earn credit. Student practice and assessment sheets use black-and-white layouts. Displays and game materials use colour; teacher keys show responses in red.
Learning focus
Students choose frequently encountered spellings from sentence meaning and word function, explain their choices, test contractions using the longer words, and transfer spelling into useful school-club messages.
Word groups: their / there / they're; your / you're; its / it's (it is and it has); to / too / two; our / hour; again, really, enough, every and would.
Classroom use
Five 50-minute lessons with preparation, modelling, guided and independent tasks, differentiation, misconception checks and formative decisions. Use the diagnostic before displays, keep answer pages hidden, and use the final spelling, reasoning and writing checks as separate evidence. The ten-question quiz offers a review.
