Children learn to separate what a character does from what a character looks like. Through four complete original stories and short practice moments, they find story details, explain why a character interests them, compare different choices and recommend a character they would like to read more about.

The garden, tower and picnic stories support the teaching sequence. The Paper Boat Test stays fresh for the final assessment. Teacher modelling and red examples show how a reason connects to an action without treating one character as the compulsory favourite. No purchased storybook is required.

The plans include preparation, timing, modelling, guided practice, independent responses, support, core and extension options, and specific next teaching steps. Children may speak, point, draw and explain, or write. Adult recording preserves the child's own meaning. The rubric assesses who/where, evidence and the link between choice and reason separately.

  • Identify an action or detail that actually appears in the text.
  • Link a personal character choice to that detail.
  • Listen to a different supported preference and give a recommendation.
