Calculating GST - Year 5
Calculating GST – Year 5 is a complete mathematics unit that helps students understand and calculate the relationship between a pre-GST price, the GST amount and the GST-inclusive price.
The teaching sequence begins with the meaning of GST and the connection to tenths, then develops efficient methods for working forward from a pre-GST price, working backwards from an inclusive price and calculating from a known GST amount. Students apply these methods to contextual purchases, price tables, invoices, receipts, budgets and supplier comparisons.
A colour display, two race-game boards and twelve task cards provide flexible whole-class, small-group and independent practice. Six worksheet resources supply core practice, contextual applications, mixed strategies and multi-step challenges. The two-page GST Pop-up Shop assessment and five-level rubric support clear evidence of learning.
