Built to Survive — Year 5 Science
How do structures and behaviours help living things survive? This unit teaches students to explain a feature’s function in a specific environment using reliable evidence. Platypus and angular pigface anchor the plant-and-animal comparison, with red kangaroo examples for further actions and transfer.
The sequence combines source cards, explicit models, a cooperative evidence game, a controlled cup-covering investigation, graphs, scientific collaboration and a fictional community decision. Students separate source facts, class measurements, illustrative practice data and predictions. A helpful adaptation is not presented as a guarantee of survival or a conscious choice.
What's included
- Ten separate editable lesson presentations, 12 slides each (120 lesson slides).
- One editable unit quiz, 24 slides, with ten questions and separate answer/reasoning slides.
- A 53-page Unit Plan PDF: teacher guidance, full and reviewed compact routes, ten timed lesson plans, two displays, eight case/source cards on two pages, a three-page cooperative game, eleven worksheet pages and eleven matched red-answer companions, a two-page assessment and one-page rubric.
- A 197-page watermarked Preview PDF containing the complete unit plan, all ten lesson presentations in order and the quiz.
- A clean Table of Contents JPEG.
Learning focus
Students connect sourced structural features and behaviours with environmental challenges, distinguish observed/source/model evidence, plan a safe controlled comparison, record repeated measurements, interpret a graph, evaluate limits, explain scientific collaboration and recommend responsible habitat care.
Classroom use
Teach ten 60-minute lessons, or the reviewed eight-session route using selected slides from the same ten decks. Sessions 1 and 8 integrate compatible lesson contributions; the complete assessment finishes by session 8. There is no combined or extra compact-route deck.
A felt-sleeve versus uncovered plastic-cup comparison uses cool water and digital thermometers. It tests a material covering under classroom conditions, not animal survival or evolution. No live-animal stress, trapping, handling, venom demonstration or student water entry is required. Supplied practice data are labelled illustrative; actual observations remain blank until collected.
Access and differentiation
Students may write, draw and label, speak, point, use gestures or a communication board/device, or dictate to an adult. Chunked sources, worked examples and extension through evidence/uncertainty retain the same learning expectation. Communication support, speed and neatness do not determine achievement.
Assessment
Use the plant-and-animal comparison, practical/source portfolio and concise conference response. A four-dimension rubric checks scientific understanding, evidence/process, explanation and responsible application. Essential assessment is complete by compact session 8 or full-route lesson 10.
