Bring a Story to Life - Year 3
Teach learners to make story choices that help a listener understand what happened and why. Begin with The Windy Map, an original school-courtyard story in which remembering the trail solves a lost-map problem. The Quiet Box models precise actions and the difference between imagined guesses and actual events.
Six safe prompts lead into original story planning. Learners create a five-part storyboard, choose two useful details, improve a vague action word and select picture/key-word cues that support their own telling. The complete Story Path game gives pairs or groups of three four unhurried rounds to practise, hear feedback and retry.
Rehearsal records capture one issue, a specific change and evidence from a second try. The fresh Missing Display Label assessment provides a classroom-gallery problem and picture/note clues without a completed story. Teachers collect the learner's plan, visual, rehearsal choice and actual delivery, then use an individual observation record, reflection and three-level rubric.
Speaking, pointing, pictures, a communication device or an adult recording learner-chosen words can support access. Story meaning and authored decisions remain the focus. Eye contact, accent and confidence are not assessment criteria.

Learning focus
Organise a beginning, problem, connected events, resolution and ending; explain causes; choose useful detail and precise vocabulary; use a visual for a key event; make meaning-related voice choices where relevant; rehearse and check one improvement.
Classroom use
Five English lessons of about 50–60 minutes for Year 3. Each lesson includes preparation, a complete teacher model, guided/independent practice, support/core/extension and evidence to collect. Use familiar partners or a small agreed audience. Read the model stories aloud where needed. Keep answer samples hidden and reserve the fresh assessment clues for the final task.
