Bases Keep Words Connected - Year 2
Bases Keep Words Connected helps children use word meaning as well as spelling when they meet a new member of a familiar family. The teacher models play/plays/played/playing and help/helps/helped/helping in sentences. Learners build words, explain how the base remains, and check whether apparent final letters really form an ending. They compare played and helped to see how the written -ed can stay the same even when its final sound changes.
The five 30–40-minute lessons move from a short entry check to guided sentence reading, independent mixed decisions, a twelve-card partner game, transfer rehearsal and an individual read/build/write assessment. Children apply the taught relation to jump, look, call and talk. The marking pages show examples and reasons; the rubric records observable evidence and a next teaching step.

Learning focus
Recognise a meaningful base, build and read a true base-plus-ending word in context, explain what the ending adds, and reject a split based only on matching final letters.
Classroom use
Teach as a five-lesson sequence or select the supported, core and extension tasks after the entry check. Use the partner game for repeated explanation practice and the final page for independent evidence.
Formats and answers
PDF and editable PPTX; 25-page Unit Plan, 18-slide presentation, 26-slide quiz; matching red-answer pages and quiz answer slides included.
Teacher benefits
The materials pair explicit modelling with sentence use and independent explanation. Contrast words help students check meaning before splitting a word.
