Ask, Collect and Explore Data - Year 3
Make the full investigation process visible and manageable. Students identify the group and variable, plan to include every source once, collect category choices or whole-number counts, select a suitable representation and report findings with appropriate limits.
The complete simulated sources support inquiries about theme choices, illustrated folders, activity choices and counters on trays. Students encounter zero values, ties and a repeated/missing-source log, so checking their method has a clear purpose. Whole collection records and graph frames give space to do the mathematics before reviewing worked feedback.
Two fresh assessment investigations require actual collection from the provided sources and creation of a graph. A neutral conference, observation record, assessment guide and rubric support judgements about the whole cycle. Access assistance is recorded separately from mathematical prompts. Optional blank forms let the class pursue a teacher-approved anonymous inquiry using actual data.

Folder kit: all 12 illustrated sources, per-source and frequency records, dot/column frames, findings and matched examples.
Formal assessment: four fresh student pages and four worked-answer pages, covering categorical and discrete numerical investigations.
Teacher evidence: observation, conference, assessment guide and four-criterion rubric.
Actual inquiry: two blank collection and graph/report forms.
Teaching PowerPoint: 40 editable slides with native text, source cards, records and graph objects.
Quiz PowerPoint: 22 editable slides, including ten consecutive question/answer pairs.
Preview PDF: 131 pages, with the unit plan followed by all teaching and quiz slides.
Table of Contents: separate JPEG.
Learning focus
Useful questions and defined sets; category choices and whole-number observations; one source per record; complete source inclusion; zero values; accurate tallies and frequencies; column graphs, picture graphs and dot plots; observation units, labels, graph keys and equal steps; ties and comparisons; answers supported by counts; limits of the provided data.
Classroom use
Whole-class modelling, partner collection and individual practice or assessment. Use whole sheets, adult-prepared pieces or the editable native objects. Students may speak, point, draw or direct an adult to record their choices. Software is optional. Keep worked answers hidden during initial attempts. Use actual-size pages for pieces and confirm each entire slip or marker fits its destination. The simulated sources need no purchased postcards or fixed class size.
Formats and answers
PDF, PPTX, JPEG. Unit Plan: 69 pages. Teaching deck: 40 slides. Quiz: 22 slides. Full Preview: 131 pages. Matched answers accompany all nine practice tasks, the kit collector/graph/report pages and four fresh assessment pages. Open work shows one valid example. Actual-data forms remain blank without an invented key.
Teacher benefits
Provides every simulated source, supports the complete investigation cycle, makes zero and frequency units explicit, preserves time for students' own collection and creation, and supports practical evidence of both data types.
