An Event Becomes History - Year 4
This Year 4 English unit helps students compare how two public broadcasts about Apollo 11 represent one mission at different times. A 1969 Moonwalk broadcast gives immediate event coverage. Capital Television News, Canberra, dated 13 July 1989, looks back with an Australian tracking-station emphasis. Students check the original broadcast dates, match broad audience and informative purpose, then use evidence from both sources to explain a continuity and a change in representation.

Learning focus
Original source dates, audience and purpose matching, seen/reported/inferred evidence, and supported explanation of changed emphasis across the two dated broadcasts.
Classroom use
Teach across five 45–60-minute lessons. Preview the linked NFSA clips and play short sections lawfully. If playback is unavailable, label modern archive descriptions clearly; do not present unviewed footage as analysed film. Support oral responses and replay; extend with a reasoned challenge to unsupported audience claims.
Formats and answers
Unit Plan PDF: 24 pages; Presentation PPTX: 18 slides; Quiz PPTX: 26 slides; watermarked Preview PDF: 68 pages. Six matching answer or marking pages follow their student pages.
Teacher benefits
The source-date model helps teachers prevent confusion between original broadcasts and the 2019 archive article. Paired evidence and answer criteria support an independent comparison rather than a past-versus-present object sort.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching files. Original NFSA broadcast footage is linked, not bundled. Follow the applicable public-source and platform licence terms for classroom playback and use.
