Students make a starting collection, perform a given addition or subtraction, then find and check the result. They learn to count each object once, recognise familiar small groups, distinguish current counters from spare or removed counters, represent zero and explain why a rearranged collection has the same quantity. Deliberately incorrect models invite students to rebuild, check and repair a result.

The sequence moves from making and adding, to taking away, checking and repairing, choosing a trustworthy model, and individual transfer and reflection. Each of the five 45-minute lesson plans includes preparation, teacher modelling, guided and independent practice, differentiation and an exit response. One combined quick-start page explains equipment, access, screen-counter use and observation scheduling.

What's included

  • Unit Plan PDF, 49 pages: one contents page, one teacher quick-start page, five lesson plans and 42 resource and answer pages.
  • Editable lesson PowerPoint, 24 slides, with three separate-counter workspaces.
  • Editable quiz PowerPoint, 22 slides: cover, ten question/answer pairs and closing slide.
  • Three colour displays and two worked models.
  • Follow an Action, Match the Action and Spot and Fix: three support/core/extension student pages per family, each followed by its corresponding answer page.
  • Action Tray Studio: rules, colour mat, eight action cards, two-turn record and keys.
  • Spot and Fix Workshop: rules, four challenge cards, four checking cards and keys.
  • Physical and virtual transfer tasks with answer pages, individual observation record and four-level rubric.
  • Sixteen answer pages within the 42-page resource count.
  • Clean Table of Contents JPG.
  • Watermarked Preview PDF, 95 pages, combining the complete Unit Plan and both decks. These are preview pages, not 95 separate activities.

Learning focus

Represent a given start and action; add and take away within 10; quantify by counting or recognising familiar small groups; check the current collection; use zero and unchanged-quantity cases; explain and repair an incorrect change model. Support begins within 5, core reaches 10, and extension develops reasoning within 10.

Classroom use

Whole-class modelling, practical maker/checker pairs, small-group practice and individual observation. Provide 10 large school-safe counters or blocks per pair, trays or the supplied mat, pencils and selected pages. Keep answer pages out of sight until students act and check.

Open the lesson PPTX offline in PowerPoint Edit view for real screen-counter movement. Students use a school-approved device or tell the teacher exactly which counters to move. Three workspaces support addition, subtraction and a fresh transfer case. A PDF picture or Slideshow click is not virtual manipulation. The files do not require a self-marking app or an internet-based activity platform.

Read stems aloud. Speaking, pointing, drawing, a communication device and adult recording are valid access choices. Record mathematical prompts separately from ordinary access support. Assessment uses actual individual actions; observations begin during lessons and continue in additional ordinary blocks where needed. Reading, handwriting and speed are not attainment criteria.
