A Theme Across Literary Forms - Year 6
This Year 6 English unit teaches students to compare a poem and a narrative on a related theme. The original mentor texts follow a changed creek crossing: the poem pauses with uncertainty, while the narrative moves through a problem and a shared response. Students use exact evidence to explain how structure, imagery, sound and pace shape each work's emotional effect. A new school-hall pair supports rehearsal; a new community-garden pair provides independent transfer.

Learning focus
Compare how literary form, structure and language choices construct a related theme and different emotional effects. The final response explains one structural and one language choice in each work with exact evidence.
Classroom use
Five lessons of approximately 45–60 minutes. Read the complete mentor pair, model one paired explanation, use guided and independent practice, run evidence-based partner card turns, rehearse on the fresh hall texts, then assess independently on the garden pair. Support includes oral rehearsal, chunked text and evidence stems; extension tests a supported alternative reading.
Teacher benefits
Original complete mentor texts, paired evidence practice, a usable partner workshop, criterion-based assessment and editable teaching/quiz decks.
